Davidson's Curry honored by Sporting News

The Sporting News has named Davidson's Stephen Curry its 2008 College Athlete of the Year, and there is an interview with him in that issue (Dec. 22).

And Curry, who leads the nation in scoring at 31.9 points per game, is -- obviously -- listed on the Naismith Trophy early-season watch list. The Naismith, won by North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough last year, is presented to the top player in college basketball.

Hansbrough would be only the third player to win it more than once if he repeats.

North Carolina's Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington are also on the list, along with area standouts Gerald Henderson of Duke, Gani Lawal of Georgia Tech and Devan Downey of South Carolina.

Just read the articles in Sporting News and I hope someone is keeping scrap books for Curry. I am a
Duke grad and fan, but I watch Davidson when I can. Curry is so good!! Actually, I dread watching the Duke-Davidson game. Wonder what Coach K is going to do? I hope he has big plans. Most can not stop the Davidson team.

Curry is such a pleasure to watch as evidenced by the huge turnout now for Davidson games. It used to be a walkup and go in for $8 game, but not anymore. What really sets Curry apart is the fact that his skill level is so far above other players. His quick release and uncanny ability to hit key shot after key shot is amazing. Shooting percentages have been on a steady decline for over 20 years as the game as evolved into a more physical game with less playing by the rules. NBA games are routinely 88-76 where they used to be 138-132 back in the 60's and 70's. Yes there are some very athletic defenders, but the real story is the decline of the skilled shooter, so Curry is a throwback. Notice the high arc on his shots...so noticable and a key to making such a high percentage of difficult and long shots. You can't slam in as many line drive shots as you can float thru high arching shots (with practice). Enjoy it while you can...it's 10 times a better show than the Bobcats and the impossibly boring play in the NBA (95% tedious with 5% amazing physical displays)
